VAULT

Autumn 2013

Based on formal analysis of the irregular relationships found within the palm vault of the Church of the Jacobins, a new form emerged that built upon the relationship of parts in the original church. An important progenitor of this form was the close analysis of irregular versus regular rib types and rib groupings. These moments of interaction between irregular and regular members were exposed in the arrangement of the ribs to the two central palm vaults. The form can be read as a collision of two centers within the apse, one composed of the existing, regular rib types and the other being an exaggeration of the irregular rib groups.
